CONTEXT

Natsai Audrey Chieza , founder of Faber Futures, a bio design research studio based in the uk, works with Streptomyces Coelicolor, a bacteria that naturally produces pigment.

The microbe naturally changes colour based on the ph of the medium its grown inside

By changing its growing environment, pigments ranging from navy blue to purple to bright pink can be produced using the living bacteria.

This pigment can then be used to dye textiles whilst using significantly less water then traditional dying methods

Most industry dyes are made up of harsh and harmful chemicals that can pollute land and water whilst most natural dyes require agricultural land and pesticides that can also put a strain on the environment. This method of using bacteria to dye textiles produces no harmful chemicals and does not use large amounts of water and land.

Natsai Audrey Chieza’s practice informed the basis of morphology and raising awareness of her innovations in using bacteria in the textile design became a major component of the project
